Distilled Accumulations: Paintings by Bill Killebrew

Members: Free
Non-Members: Parthenon Admission
Through January 26, 2013
The Parthenon Museum is pleased to announce an exhibition of the work of Bill Killebrew. The exhibit will feature eight large canvases, including one 14' diptych, as well as Afternoon Light from the Parthenon's Century III Collection and several smaller works. A Nashville native, Killebrew has worked steadily for the past forty years, selling paintings to collectors across the state and beyond, but the Parthenon exhibit is his first museum show.

Deeply influenced by master painters such as Jean-Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) and Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), and inspired by both the painting and writing of twentieth-century American Fairfield Porter, Killebrew celebrates the patterns he finds in his home and the landscape of his backyard and family. He accumulates thick paint by piling brushstroke upon brushstroke while simultaneously distilling and flattening the objects n the picture. One of Killebrew's mammoth canvases was recently selected by the Convention Center Art Committee to hang permanently in the new Convention Center beginning in the spring of 2013.

ARTWORK AMONG US: Portraits by Juan Pont Lezica

Members: Free
Non-Members: Parthenon Admission
Through September 15, 2012 at the Parthenon
DEMETRIA KALODIMOS, GUEST CURATOR

The Parthenon is pleased to announce a new exhibition featuring photographic portraits by Juan Pont Lezica, guest curated by Channel 4 news anchor Demetria Kalodimos. In these photographs, Juan Pont Lezica has reimagined iconic paintings and sculptures, posing prominent Nashvillians in settings that reference the original artwork, using props, wardrobe, and makeup to create his whimsical interpretations. The title "Artwork Among Us" suggests that the inspiring work done by these individuals makes them living, breathing works of art.

The resulting photographs, which feature such famous Nashvillians as former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George, award-winning novelist Ann Patchett, and Nashville Symphony conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, among others, are playful takes on the original artworks they reference as well as the sitters themselves, allowing us to see these beloved Nashvillians in a new light.

The exhibition will also include behind-the-scenes documentary footage of the photo shoots, created by guest curator Demetria Kalodimos.
